Teens
And The Law
Launched recently on 23 April 2005, Teens and the
Law is part of SAWL’s continuing commitment to the legal education
of the community. Teens and the Law is the only book in Singapore
that take pains to explain the Singapore Laws to teenagers. Legal
knowledge is not easily accessible in Singapore and much of what
Singaporean teenagers know is based on what they watch on TV. With
the support of the Ministry of Education, SAWL interviewed more
than 100 Secondary school students and asked them what concerns
they have about the law. Their feedback provided SAWL with valuable
insights into the questions or concerns of our teenagers and much
of the book was conceptualized because of such feedback.
Some questions found in the book:
- Where does the law come from? Where can I find the laws?
- My father beats me and my mother whenever he is angry. My mother
doesn't want to do anything about it. What can I do?
- My parents are getting a divorce. Do I have a say as to whom
I want to stay with after the divorce?
- I am 16 years old. My girlfriend is 14. We had sex a few times
and she always agreed. Her father found out about it and threatened
to report me to the police. Would I be in trouble with the law?
- How old must I be before I can get a tattoo?
- What is copyright?
- A few of my friends have been lending each other pornographic
magazines to read. Will we be in trouble if the teacher found
out?
